McKenzie Method of Physical Therapy

Developed by world-renowned expert physiotherapist Robin McKenzie in the 1950s, this well-researched, exercise based approach of assessment, diagnosis and treatment uses a comprehensive and clinically reasoned evaluation of patients without the use of expensive diagnostic imaging (e.g. x-rays and MRIs). The treatment principles of the McKenzie Method promote the body's potential to repair itself and do not involve the use of medication, heat, cold, ultrasound, needles, or surgery. McKenzie allows patients to learn the principles and empowers them to be in control of their own symptom management, which can reduce dependency on medical intervention.

If utilized correctly, the achievable goals of the McKenzie Method in a cost- and time-effective manner are to:

  • Accurately understand the patient's presentation  and behaviour of symptoms.

  • Determine the most appropriate and effective treatment plan.

  • Eliminate symptoms and restore full function.

  • Empower the patient to self treat and prevent recurrences.

  • Help inform patients if other medical advice or testing is needed.

Acupuncture

Chinese medicine is a comprehensive system that is able to treat a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.  It is a particularly effective choice for conditions that Western medicine does not understand or for which it has no effective treatment.  Chinese medicine also works well as an adjunctive form of treatment to common Western treatment practices.   Conditions commonly treated with Chinese Medicine include:  cold and flu, sinusitis, gastrointesinal disorders, headache, musculoskeletal pain, asthma, anxiety, and gynecological disorders.

Treatment may involve various components such as Acupuncture, Acupressure, Chinese Herbs, Moxabustion, Cupping, or Gua Sha.

It is very safe. When practiced correctly by trained, qualified practitioners, acupuncture and Chinese herbs are extremely safe.  Acupuncturists today use individually packaged, sterile, disposable needles.  There are also virtually no side effects to Chinese medicine, which means that a “healthy” person can get treatment to stay healthy and grounded.  It can be used for treatment of children as well as adults of all ages.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is a type of treatment in which a trained and certified medical professional manipulates the soft tissues of your body — muscle, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and skin — using varying degrees of pressure and movement.

Massage is generally considered part of complementary and integrative medicine. It's increasingly being offered along with standard treatment for a wide range of medical conditions and situations.

Studies of the benefits of massage demonstrate that it is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension.

Infrared Sauna

An infrared sauna is a type of sauna that uses light to create heat. This type of sauna is sometimes called a far-infrared sauna — "far" describes where the infrared waves fall on the light spectrum. A traditional sauna uses heat to warm the air, which in turn warms your body. An infrared sauna heats your body directly without warming the air around you.

Several studies have looked at using infrared saunas in the treatment of chronic health problems, such as high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, dementia and Alzheimer's disease, headache, type 2 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, and found some evidence of benefit.
